People's response

The use of militant tactics and violence bought the suffragettes a negative image in society. It has been argued that their actions only strengthened opposition to their suffrage campaign. Militancy also caused the departure of many important members of the WSPU because they did not approve of the use of violent tactics and the destruction of property. One of those who left was one of Emmeline Pankhurst's daughters, Adela.
