What is the legacy?

Spanish national identity

During the 19th century and for most of the 20th century, most scholarly books about Islamic Spain made few connections with contemporary Spanish national identity although they did acknowledge its contribution to Spain’s cultural heritage.

Nevertheless, recent genetic studies have highlighted that inspite of thre centuries of persecution and expulsion, 20 percent of the population of the Iberian Peninsula has Sephardic Jewish ancestry and 11 percent have DNA reflecting Moorish ancestry.
