What does this picture tell you about the tragedy of the expulsion?
Philip III commissioned this collection of great pictures in 1612, three years after the deportation. These oils were funded by the assets and properties abandoned by the Moriscos in Valencia.
The picture shows perfectly how a Moorish father says goodbye to his daughter, possibly for the last time. The tragedy of this separation is simultaneously enhanced and diminished by repetition.
We can also see an old man sitting on the arms of two bearers, approaching one of the boats. The drama of the scene is very poignantly portrayed.
