Catholic Royalty in Spain became openly hostile towards Muslims at the end of the 14th century. In Castile, the Parliament (Cortes) of 1385 and again in 1389 imposed restrictive measures and new taxes on the Muslims. Many of them started emigrating to Granada but this emigration was prohibited in 1407. In addition, in 1408, the Crown ordered them to wear a hood of yellow cloth or an emblem in the shape of a moon on the right shoulder. The situation of the Muslims living under Christian rule further deteriorated under John I, when professional and personal relations between Muslims and Christians were forbidden. Therefore, the monarchy started intervening in the administration of justice as it affected Jews and Muslims, even though they had previously promised not to do so. In Murcia, Seville and Avila the communities protested because of the violation of their legal rights and the economic implications that this meant for them.
