The Context

The region before the massacre

.

Caprara di Sopra and di Sotto used to be a very lively village, centre of the life of the rural community of Monte Sole. There was a “osteria”, a typical italian tavern (which was also a small shop), where people gathered especially during wintertime to chat, to play cards, to dance and to drink wine. Almost 50 families lived in the village plus refugees from Bologna, which had been heavily bombed by the Allies in the summer of 1944.
