Introduction to the bigger picture

Throughout history, religion has been a causal factor in a lot of social and political conflicts. One of the reasons is that it has had a crucial role when it comes to people defining their individual and collective identities. Depending on the context, the membership of a creed can mean the enjoyment of privileges and rights or the violation of freedoms, persecution and even death. Moreover, religion is often used to distinguish the “Us” from the “Other”, so people of different creeds have been frequently stereotyped and considered heretic, impure, wicked, treacherous, cruel, and many more expressions which have even dehumanized them and led to them being deprived of their most basic human rights.
