European Colonial Settlement in the Caribbean: Duke Jacobus of Courland’s Colony in Tobago

Duke Jacobus Kettler was a Latvian Duke. In 1654, he conquered Tobago and renamed the colony New Courland. The Duchy of Courland and Semigallia existed in the western part of present-day Latvia from 1561 until 1795. Under the rule of Duke Jacobus Kettler, the Duchy reached the peak of its prosperity.
